Dr. Montessori & Peace Education

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician - (the first woman MD in Italy), scientist, educator, writer, feminist, and activist. Based on years of careful observation of children and informed by her distinctive approach to evolutionary psychological science, she founded a new “scientific pedagogy.”

Every aspect of her experiential pedagogy is based on her extensive, personal and clinical observations, experiments, and direct study of the development of the child. Dr. Montessori is recognized as one of the pioneers in the development of early childhood education.

Montessori believed that it is necessary to think of education as peace, not education for peace.  She believed that it is not enough to simply talk about peace, we must create an environment that will promote the development of peaceful individuals. The Children's House was created to develop inner harmony in children, harmony that spreads to the families and society as a whole.

To Montessori, pacifism and Montessori education were one and the same. She spoke frequently at UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) about how a just, peaceful, and equitable approach to education was the key to achieving world peace. - Montessori For Today
